Introduction: In recent years, the effect of green cumin for the treatment of diabetes type II has been known in trials on laboratory animals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of 50 and 100 mg doses of green cumin essential oil on anthropometric measurements, glucose homeostasis parameters and lipid profile in patients with diabetes type 2.
Methods: This study was a double blind and placebo controlled clinical trial that was approved by ethics committee of Urmia University of Medical Sciences. In the present study, the subjects were divided into three groups after selecting the patients with diabetes type 2 from Imam Khomeini hospital’s clinics randomly according to the inclusion criteria: the groups who consumed the 100 & 50 mg doses of alcoholic extract of cumin, and the placebo group(edible paraffin). Before and after 8 weeks intervention, anthropometric measurements(height, weight, body mass indx and skinfold) and blood samples were taken. Then all of these data were analyzed by SPSS software(K-S test, paired T-test, ANOVA, bonferroni and MANCOVA).
Results: Results showed that the mean of fasting blood sugar (FBS), serum levels of insulin, HOMA-IR, LDL and total cholesterol in both supplement groups (P <0.001) reduced significantly, and the HDL increased significantly in comparison with placebo group.
Conclusion: This study indicated that Short-term daily supplementation green cumin extract -100 or 50 mg -in patients with diabetes type 2 during 8 weeks may reduce serum levels of insulin, blood glucose, total cholesterol and triglyceride.
