Abstract:   (6 Views)
Introduction: The patients undergoing central venous catheterization not only experience anxiety related to the central venous catheter placement surgery but also experience anxiety related to living with hemodialysis. The present study aimed to determine the effect of inhaling the scent of Citrus aurantium on anxiety in patients undergoing central venous catheterization for hemodialysis.
Methods: The present study was a clinical trial conducted on 60 patients referred to Labafinejad Hospital in Tehran, Iran, in 2024. Participants were randomly divided into two groups of 30 (test and control) with informed consent. In the test group, three drops of Citrus aurantium scent were applied for 20 minutes before catheterization, and in the control group, three drops of water served as a placebo. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and the Spielberger Standard Anxiety Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using inferential tests and SPSS (version 27) software. The significance level was set at 0.05.
Results: The mean total anxiety scores of patients before the intervention were 77.43±6.70 in the intervention group and 76.67±5.43 in the control group, which was not statistically significant. After the intervention, the scores reached 71.70±6.61 in the intervention group and 76.20±5.21 in the control group, with a significant difference in the intervention group (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The scent of Citrus aurantium has a beneficial effect on reducing anxiety in patients undergoing central venous catheterization for hemodialysis. The present intervention, being a useful, effective, and inexpensive approach, can be incorporated into the agenda of caregivers, particularly nurses.
