Introduction: To investigate the effects of tartaric acid supplementation combined with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on inflammatory markers (CRP, IL-6, TNF-α) and anaerobic performance in female gymnasts.
Methods: Thirty-six female gymnasts (18–25 years) were randomly assigned into three groups: training + supplement, training + placebo, and control. The HIIT protocol (30s running at 100% maximal aerobic speed, 30s active recovery) was performed for 8 weeks. The supplement group consumed 20 mg/kg tartaric acid 45 min before each session (Khani et al., 2024). The CRP, IL-6, TNF-α, and anaerobic performance (RAST test) were measured at baseline and 48 h post-intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (p≤0.05).
Results: The effect of time was significant for all variables. Compared to the control group, HIIT significantly reduced CRP (-29.62% and -19.69%, p=0.001), IL-6 (-15.04% and -16.15%, p=0.001), TNF-α (-13.33% and -14.96%, p=0.001), and increased anaerobic performance (+11.21% and +10.14%, p=0.001) in both training groups. However, no significant differences were observed between the training + supplement and training + placebo groups for any variable (p>0.05). No significant changes occurred in the control group.
Conclusion: High-intensity interval training significantly improved performance in female gymnasts. Under the conditions of this study, short-term tartaric acid supplementation (20 mg/kg) showed no significant additional effect compared to placebo. Further long-term studies with different dosages are recommended.
