Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of tartaric acid supplementation combined with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on inflammatory indices, including C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and anaerobic performance in female gymnasts.
Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted with a pretest-posttest design along with a control group in 2024 in Doroud city, Lorestan province, Iran. The sampling method was purposive convenience sampling, and written informed consent was obtained from all participants. Thirty-six female gymnasts (aged 18–25 years) were randomly assigned to three groups of 12: training + supplement, training + placebo, and control (weight: 58.63±2.4 kg, height: 162.9±4.1 cm, BMI: 21.1±4.8 kg/m²). The HIIT protocol was performed for 8 weeks (30 sec of running at 100% of maximal aerobic speed followed by 30 sec of active recovery). The supplement group consumed 20 mg/kg body weight of tartaric acid 45 min before each training session. Levels of CRP, IL-6, TNF-α, and anaerobic performance (RAST test) were measured at pretest and 48 h post-intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (p≤0.05).
Results: The effect of time was significant for all variables. Compared to the control group, HIIT in the training + supplement and training + placebo groups significantly reduced CRP (-29.62% and -19.69%, respectively, p=0.001), IL-6 (-15.04% and -16.15%, respectively, p= 0.001), TNF-α (-13.33% and -14.96%, respectively, p=0.001), and increased anaerobic performance (+11.21% and +10.14%, respectively, p=0.001). However, no significant difference was observed between the training + supplement and training + placebo groups in any of the variables (p≥0.05). No significant changes were observed in the control group for any of the variables (p≥0.05).
Conclusion: High-intensity interval training alone plays a primary role in reducing systemic inflammation and improving anaerobic performance in female gymnasts. Regarding short-term tartaric acid supplementation at a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight, no significant difference was observed between the supplement and placebo groups under the conditions of this study. Further long-term studies with different dosages are recommended to clarify the precise role of this compound.
