Background and Objective: Despite the beneficial effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in patients with schizophrenia, there is still uncertainty regarding its impact on cognitive impairment. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of ECT on the cognitive status of hospitalized patients with schizophrenia in Velayat Hospital, Gorgan, Iran.
Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest–posttest design. Twenty-five hospitalized patients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), who met the clinical indications for ECT, were recruited using a convenience sampling method. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants or their legal guardians before enrollment. Eligible patients completed the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) 1 h before the first ECT session and again 3 h after completing a six-session course of ECT. Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 16). Statistical analyses included the Chi-square test, paired t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson's correlation coefficient.
Results: The mean age of participants was 36.72 ± 10.08 years, and the majority were female (56%). The mean MoCA scores before and after the intervention were 18.00 ± 2.75 and 21.00 ± 3.13, respectively. The mean MMSE scores were 19.88 ± 2.69 before and 21.92 ± 2.78 after the intervention (p=0.001), indicating an improvement in cognitive impairment following ECT. No significant association was found between demographic variables and ECT-related factors using the applied statistical tests (p>0.05).
Conclusion: The electroconvulsive therapy may be effective in improving cognitive deficits in patients with schizophrenia. Patients and their families can be reassured that this treatment method has no negative impact on memory function.
