Introduction: Vaccination is considered the safest method to prevent diseases and mortalities. The alleviation of vaccine-induced pain in infants is of utmost importance. The present study aimed to compare the effects of music therapy and 24% oral sucrose consumption on vaccination-induced pain in infants.
Materials and Methods: A total of 135 six-month-old infants from healthcare centers in Khomein were randomly divided into three groups: music, sucrose, and control. After obtaining written consent, in the sucrose intervention group, 1 cc of 24% sucrose was administered to the infant using a syringe approximately 10 min before vaccination. For the music intervention group, a piece of piano music was played from 3 min before to 3 min after the vaccination. The control group received no intervention. Pain assessment was performed using the Modified Behavioral Pain Scale (MBPS). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 26).
Results: The results obtained showed that the mean and standard deviation of the pain score were 8.11 ± 0.48 in the music intervention group, 7.28 ± 0.62 in the sucrose intervention group, and 9.26 ± 0.49 in the control group. A statistically significant difference was observed among the mean pain scores of the three groups (p=0.0000).
Conclusion: The mean intensity of vaccination-induced pain was lower in both intervention groups compared to the control group, and it was lower in the oral sucrose intervention group than in the music intervention group. Therefore, the use of both intervention methods is recommended given the inevitability of vaccination. However, due to the greater effectiveness of the sucrose method, this method is introduced as the preferred option.
