Abstract: (20 Views)
Background and Aim: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent disease worldwide and is characterized by abnormal accumulation of fat in the liver. The present study aimed to determine the effect of interval training and omega-3 on the expression of BAX, BCL-2, and the BCL2/Bax ratio in liver tissue of rats with NAFLD.
Materials and Methods: In this laboratory study, 40 male Wistar rats (weight 156.98±7.82 g) were divided into five groups: healthy control (CN), NAFLD, NAFLD + interval training (TRNAF), NAFLD + omega-3 supplementation (SUPNAF), and NAFLD + interval training + omega-3 supplementation (TRSUPNAF). The supplement groups were orally administered 1 g of omega-3 per kilogram of body weight throughout the eight-week intervention period. The interval training protocol comprised treadmill running at speeds of 14–28 m/min, with sessions conducted five days per week for eight weeks.
Results: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease Induction led to a significant increase in BAX expression and the BAX/BCL2 ratio, alongside a significant reduction in BCL2 expression (p=0.0001). When compared to the NAFLD group, the TRNAF, SUPNAF, and TRSUPNAF groups exhibited significant decreases in both BAX expression and the BAX/BCL2 ratio (TRNAF: p=0.021 and p=0.0001, respectively; SUPNAF: p=0.033 and p=0.0001, respectively; TRSUPNAF: p=0.0001). In contrast, BCL2 expression was significantly elevated in the TRNAF (p=0.029), SUPNAF (p=0.032), and TRSUPNAF (p=0.0001) groups compared to the NAFLD group.
Conclusion: The findings of the present research provide further confirmation that exercise combined with omega-3 consumption reduces apoptosis and promotes the survival of healthy cells in the liver tissue of rats.
