Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the interactive effect of interval training and ethanol extract of Adiantum Capillus Veneris on the levels of metallothionein in lung male rats.
Methods: 25 Male Wister rats three weeks with an average weight of 68 ± 9g after two weeks the familiar with the environment were randomly divided into five groups; 6-week control, 9-week control, 6-week training, 9-week training, interactive training and supplement (6-week interval training + 3 weeks Adiantum Capillus Veneris). Adiantum Capillus Veneris herbal supplement after 6 weeks, the daily dose of 200 mg per kilogram of body weight orally supplemented groups were fed. Increasing interval training for 6 sessions per week, each session 30 minutes at a speed of 15 to 70 meters per minute rehearsing. Finally, lung tissue was extracted for measuring the levels of metallothionein. Analysis of data was performed using one-way ANOVA at P≤0.05.
Results: The results showed that the interval training significantly increased the level of metallothionein in the 6-week training group (0.52±0.06) compared to the 6-week control group (0.28±0.04), 9-week control group (0.32±0.05), 9-week training group (0.34±0.04) and the combination of training-supplementation (0.38±0.04). However, the interaction training-supplementation did not have significant effect on the levels of metallothionein in the lungs of male rats (p>0.05).
Conclusion: According to the results, six weeks of interval training resulted to significant increase in lung metallothionein levels. Probably the interactive effect of Adiantum Capillus Veneris supplementation and interval training can help reduce pulmonary oxidative stress by modulating lung metallothionein levels.
