Abstract:   (27 Views)
Background and Objective: Nonspecific chronic low back pain is one of the common problems in postmenopausal women and older adults, which can reduce motor function and quality of life (QOL). Due to limitations of pharmacological treatments in this population, non-invasive interventions are of particular importance. This research aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks of aquatic exercise on motor function and QOL in postmenopausal women with nonspecific chronic low back pain.
Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial. Forty menopausal women (age: 56.83 ± 3.57 years; weight: 77.97 ± 8.85 kg; height: 1.65 ± 3.83 m; BMI: 28.31 ± 2.77 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in water exercise for eight weeks, with two sessions per week (45-60 minutes). Trunk and hamstring flexibility were assessed using the Schober and Lasik tests; static and dynamic balance using single-leg standing and the timed up-and-go test; QOL using the SF-36 questionnaire; and pain and disability using the Quebec Back Pain Disability Questionnaire, before and after the intervention. The results were analyzed using paired t-tests and analysis of covariance in SPSS (version 22), with a significance level of (P ≤ 0.05).
Results: Following the intervention, trunk flexibility significantly improved in the experimental group from 2.75 ± 1.10 to 3.54 ± 1.07 (P = 0.01), and hamstring flexibility increased significantly from 57.43 ± 7.50 to 59.36 ± 7.30 (P = 0.01). Additionally, static balance improved significantly from 7.65 ± 3.12 to 10.37 ± 3.66 (P = 0.03), while pain and disability scores decreased significantly from 59.33 ± 2.35 to 47.07 ± 6.33 (P = 0.01). Furthermore, several QOL domains improved significantly (P ≤ 0.05).
Conclusion: According to the research findings, aquatic exercise can be used as a safe and effective method to improve motor function and QOL in postmenopausal women with nonspecific chronic low back pain; therefore, it is suggested to be incorporated into care and rehabilitation programs.
