Abstract:   (30 Views)
Background and Aim: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a common disorder that profoundly affects the psychological and social well-being of adolescents. Given the role of cognitive-emotional components in exacerbating this syndrome, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of schema therapy on self-efficacy and alexithymia in 15-18-year-old adolescents with PMS in Yazd, Iran.
Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of all 15-18-year-old female adolescents with PMS who visited healthcare centers in Yazd during the second half of 2023. From this population, 30 individuals were selected via convenience sampling and were randomly assigned into two groups: experimental and control (n=15, each). The experimental group underwent eight individual 60-minute schema therapy sessions, while the control group remained on a waiting list and received no intervention. Data were collected using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE) and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) in two stages, before and after the intervention. Then, the collected data were analyzed using SPSS (version 26) and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA).
Results: The results obtained indicated a significant difference between the experimental and control groups regarding the dependent variables. More precisely, the schema therapy intervention significantly increased self-efficacy (η²=0.45) and reduced overall alexithymia (η²=0.56) in the experimental group. Furthermore, significant improvements were observed across all subscales of the TAS-20, namely, difficulty identifying feelings, difficulty describing feelings, and externally oriented thinking, in the experimental group compared to the control group (p<0.01). The findings indicate the notable effectiveness of the intervention on both main components of the study.
Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that schema therapy, by targeting early maladaptive schemas and associated coping mechanisms, can be used as an effective intervention to improve self-efficacy and emotional regulation in adolescents with PMS. Therefore, incorporating this approach into adolescent healthcare programs can contribute to enhancing their mental health.
